How To Find Us

From A1(m) approx 6 miles from north or south.

A1 > A692 from the north or A693 from south. > A6076 Stanley – Sunniside. Brown tourist signs on A6076 turn into Birkheads Lane. Pass Hedley Grange, Farm Shop, Hedley Hall Woodland Trust, our car park entrance is a further 400yds on your left, past the pond and exactly one mile from leaving the A6076. This is also the recommended route for coaches using the drop off point.

ACCESS – Car / Coach Parking

Free parking space for customers. approx 22 cars /mini buses.

There is a sloping path from the car park to the Coffee Shop, Nursery & Tea Terraces.

Coaches by prior appt. only. Group organisers will be given parking instructions for coaches.

Wheelchair Access

The Coffee Shop, Nursery & Tea Terraces are accessible for wheelchair users. The gardens have many changes in surfaces and are on a slope. We are sorry but mobility scooters are too wide for the gravel paths. There are seats dotted around the gardens. Our drive may be used as a drop off point for the coffee shop if you are not the driver. Please don’t park on our drive unless pre- arranged as it restricts other visitors access. We have two toilets both accessible by ramps, one with baby changing facilities Tel. 07778447920.

CYCLISTS, WALKERS & PUBLIC TRANSPORT Map Ref NZ 220 569

Buses run half hourly between Newcastle & Stanley X 30/31 Disembark at Tanfield Steam Railway and follow the Bowes Cycle Path ( on the opposite side of the road from the railway entrance) Walk 1 mile / 20mins along a reasonable surface with panoramic views to Birkheads Lane. At the road, turn right to pass in front of Birkhead Cottages then enter our drive into the Topiary Garden. We have a safe bike parking area in the yard for cyclists.

‘BRING A FRIEND’ SEASON TICKET FOR two £25 

ADULTS £5 -not available until we’re allowed to open to the general public.

NB. ADMISSION charges have remained the same for 8 years and are essential to help pay for maintenance  of the gardens, thank you for your support.

SEASON TICKETS  REVISED CONDITIONS; – COVID 19 – Things may change but we’ll do what is in everyones best interest & safety.

We have reviewed our Opening hours & Season Ticket Conditions to re-open in stages & feel that we are following all of the guidelines for maximum safety.  We are open with entry limited to Season Ticket Members through Pre booked hourly Appointment Slots  for 2 people. There is a one way system in place with Social Distancing in place throughout. There will be a maximum of 3 couples in the gardens at any one time. (This means that 2 or 3 couples can book the same slot if they are all members & want to meet in the garden. In this eventuality no-one else will be booked in.) Sorry guidelines are, no children at present but if you have a Season Ticket with a child please contact Christine to book a slot as soon as this becomes acceptable.  

 Season Tickets & Plants can be purchased with contactless payments only.  At present Ticket holders Ring, Text or email to book a slot in advance. If we have more than one couple in at any time we may have to close the house & private garden because of narrow paths, the remainder of the gardens have plenty of distancing space.  Contactless payments only for Plants & Season Ticket Purchases. The Cafe & Toilets will remain closed.

THE WAY FORWARD – When we are allowed to reopen the Cafe/Toilets & bring in staff, our opening hours will be changed to fine days only so that outdoor seating may be used to its maximum. We realise that this will be a change in conditions for Ticket Holders but hope that the added attraction of having the garden to yourselves & our personal attention will compensate in some way.  Thank you for your understanding & we look forward to seeing you again.
