From A1(m) approx 6 miles from north or south. PLEASE CHECK THAT WE WILL BE OPEN BEFORE SETTING OUT.
A1 > A692 from the north or A693 from south. > A6076 Stanley – Sunniside. Brown tourist signs on A6076 turn into Birkheads Lane. Pass Hedley Grange, Farm Shop, Hedley Hall Woodland Trust, our car park entrance is a further 400yds on your left, past the pond and exactly one mile from leaving the A6076. This is the recommended route for coaches using the drop off point.
ACCESS – Car / Coach Parking
Free parking space for customers. approx 22 cars /mini buses.
There is a sloping path from the car park to the Coffee Shop, Nursery & Tea Terraces.
Coaches by prior appt. only. Group organisers will be given parking instructions for coaches.
Wheelchair Access
The Coffee Shop, Nursery & Tea Terraces are accessible for wheelchair users. The gardens have many changes in surfaces and are on a slope. We are sorry but mobility scooters are too wide for the gravel paths. There are seats dotted around the gardens. Our drive may be used as a drop off point for the coffee shop if you are not the driver. Please don’t park on our drive unless pre- arranged as it restricts access to others. We have two toilets both accessible by ramps, one with baby changing facilities Tel. 07778447920.

Buses run half hourly between Newcastle & Stanley X 30/31 Disembark at Tanfield Steam Railway and follow the Bowes Cycle Path ( on the opposite side of the road from the railway entrance) Walk 1 mile / 20mins along a reasonable surface with panoramic views to Birkheads Lane. At the road, turn right to pass in front of Birkhead Cottages then enter our drive into the Topiary Garden. We have a safe bike parking area in the yard for cyclists.
