How to get here

By Car from A1(m) approx 6 miles.
From A1 onto A692 from the north or A693 to A6076 road between Stanley, Co Durham & Sunniside Gateshead . From the North A692 we have brown tourist signs at The Potters Wheel traffic lights at Sunniside onto A6076, Tanfield Steam Railway and at the left turn into Birkheads Lane from A6076. From South A693 follow the sign for Causey Arch onto A6076 there is a sign on the junction 400yds after passing the Causey Arch layby. Turn right into Birkheads Lane, past Hedley Grange and Hedley Hall Woodland Trust, past the pond on your left and our car park entrance is 400yds on your left, exactly one mile from the A6076 junction.

This is the recommended route for coaches using the drop off point.

OUR POST CODE FOR SAT. NAV. NE16 5EL you will be brought in via small country lanes, look out for our brown signs as you get closer.

Public Transport

Bus runs between Newcastle or Stanley board the x30/31 ask for the Tanfield Railway and follow the Bowes Cycle Path on the opposite side of the road from the railway entrance to Birkheads Lane approx 1 mile. When you reach the road, turn right down the hill past the cottages and enter onto our drive on your right into the Topiary Garden. From the bus stop it’s approx a 20 minute walk along a reasonable surface with panoramic views. We have a safe bike parking area.

Car Parking

We have enough space for approx 20 cars, the entrance is wide enough to get a fire engine through-we’ve tried. Large coaches are better to drop off visitors at the house drive further up the lane.

Wheelchair Access or difficulty walking uphills?

Wheelchairs-Access is easiest if you park on our drive, which has shallow ramp access to the coffee shop, nursery & Tea Terraces. Walking Aids use the drive as a drop off point and leave the car in the car park. If you want to ring first we’ll make sure the gates are open for you. 01207 232262 or 07778447920

Toilets

One ( not disabled) visitor toilet only at present & no baby changing facilities, hopefully next year!
