Nursery

Adjoining the gardens is the plant nursery. The majority of the plants for sale are produced on the nursery by traditional methods of stock beds or from plants growing in the gardens at 650ft above sea level. We are a selective growers, propagating only plants which we believe to be hardy and garden worthy. The nursery provides visitors with the chance to purchase plants they may have seen growing in the gardens and feel that they can’t live without!

The nursery can be visited without going through the main gardens and there is no charge for entry and is open 10am-5pm Wednesday-Sunday

The plants for sale can all be seen growing in the gardens and are mostly hardy herbaceous perennials, bulbs, shrubs, climbers & rock plants. A limited variety of small trees is available.

Sale beds in the nursery include;

• Connoisseurs plants - the prima donnas of the plant world
• Plants for Sun, Shade, Dry or Damp
• Shrubs - Evergreen and Deciduous
• Bulbs -seasonal
• Climbing plants & wall shrubs
• Water plants – marginals & water lilies including moisture lovers
• Rock plants for thin gravelly soil sun & shade
• Herbs culinary and decorative
• Hostas
• Plants for average conditions mostly herbaceous perennials are arranged by height; front of border (under 12’’) middle of border 12-24’’ back of border 24’’+

Pot sizes most herbaceous plants are potted in half or two litre pots while shrubs & bamboos are in 3litre pots. Our compost is a mixture of 50/50 multi purpose and a loam base which gives very good results when transferred to any type of soil.

POTTING SHED

We have an ever - changing selection of garden artefacts, wooden wheel barrows, potato scales, chimney pots, milk churns, Victorian edging etc in display in the potting shed and nursery sales area. All at reasonable prices.

The original potting shed is now used as our ticket office, plant & artefact shop, We take all major cards for payments over £10.00
